G\u00e9rard Lavall\u00e9e, professor of visual arts and art history at Coll\u00e8ge de Saint-Laurent, founded the Nova and Vetera Gallery<\/strong> in 1962. He was driven by a desire for the recognition and preservation of Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s cultural heritage, but also by the fear that American or Ontarian collectors might appropriate this heritage. The gallery is incorporated into the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019art de Saint-Laurent<\/strong> in 1977 and becomes, in 2003, the Mus\u00e9e des ma\u00eetres et artisans du Qu\u00e9bec<\/strong>. Mr. Lavall\u00e9e passed away in 2018, but his legacy is alive and well.<\/p>\n

Today, in addition to the objects at the MUMAQ, nearly 14,000 objects are stored in the museum reserve, inaugurated in 2013 and located in the basement of the Biblioth\u00e8que du Bois\u00e9. The museum received, in 2014, the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 des mus\u00e9es qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois Award of Excellence<\/strong> for its construction as well as the Canadian Museums Association\u2019s Award of Outstanding Achievement in Conservation<\/strong> in 2015.<\/p>\n

In 2022, we received another Canadian Museums Association Outstanding Achievement Award<\/strong> - this time, in Exhibitions<\/strong> for our new permanent exhibition, Meaningful Objets: A History of Craft in Qu\u00e9bec<\/em>!<\/p>\n
